Concussion Management

At Tessera Physical Therapy, our team of experienced physical therapists specializes in the assessment and management of concussions and vestibular disorders. We offer comprehensive rehabilitation programs designed to help individuals recover from concussion-related symptoms and improve their overall function and quality of life.

Concussion Management

Our concussion management program begins with a thorough evaluation to assess the severity of the concussion and identify any associated symptoms. This may include a review of medical history, neurological tests, balance assessments, and assessments of cognitive function.
Based on the findings of the evaluation, our physical therapists will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to address the specific needs and goals of each individual. Treatment may include:
  • Rest and Activity Modification: In the acute phase of concussion recovery, rest and activity modification may be recommended to allow the brain to heal and prevent exacerbation of symptoms.
  • Gradual Return to Activity: As symptoms improve, our therapists will work with you to gradually reintroduce physical activity and exercise, taking into account your tolerance and symptom response.
  • Vestibular Rehabilitation: For individuals experiencing vestibular symptoms such as dizziness and imbalance, vestibular rehabilitation exercises may be prescribed to help improve balance, reduce dizziness, and restore normal function of the vestibular system.
  • Cognitive Rehabilitation: Cognitive rehabilitation exercises may be recommended to address difficulties with concentration, memory, and executive function that can occur following a concussion.

Vestibular Management

For individuals with vestibular disorders such as vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis, or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), our vestibular management program offers effective rehabilitation strategies to alleviate symptoms and improve balance and function. Treatment may include:
  • Canalith Repositioning Maneuvers: For individuals with BPPV, canalith repositioning maneuvers such as the Epley maneuver or the Semont maneuver may be performed to reposition displaced otoconia (calcium crystals) within the inner ear.
  • Balance Training: Balance training exercises are designed to improve stability and reduce the risk of falls in individuals with vestibular disorders. These exercises may include static and dynamic balance activities, gait training, and visual-vestibular exercises.
  • Gaze Stabilization Exercises: Gaze stabilization exercises help improve the ability to maintain visual focus during head movements, reducing symptoms of dizziness and vertigo.
  • Habituation Exercises: Habituation exercises involve repeated exposure to movements or environments that provoke symptoms, helping to desensitize the vestibular system and reduce symptoms over time.
